The historic workhorse white of the Black Sea coast, around Varna and Shumen, closely related to Serbian Smederevka. High-yielding, and for decades destined mostly for rakia and bulk wine. Handled with lower yields it gives green apple, citrus peel and a faintly floral, waxy character. A small quality revival is under way, including skin-contact versions.
