Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Melnik)

Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Melnik)

Bulgaria · Red · Limited (B)

“Broad-leaved Melnik vine.” Grown almost exclusively in the Struma Valley around Melnik and Sandanski in the far southwest, where the Mediterranean influence gives it the heat it needs. Ripens extremely late, produces high alcohol and grippy tannin, with tobacco, dried fig and leather. Traditionally aged for years in large barrels. Difficult to grow, so plantings stay small; exports are modest but growing.
